Job Responsibilities
• Lead or co-lead the SALT-Payroll Tax practice area within the Tax National Office, serving as a technical resource for complex state and local payroll tax matters.
• Advise clients on multi-state payroll tax compliance, including state and local withholding, unemployment insurance, disability, paid family leave, local payroll taxes, and other employment tax obligations.
• Provide technical guidance on state payroll tax registration, nexus, worker location issues, resident and nonresident withholding, mobility, remote work, and reciprocal state arrangements.
• Support clients with state and local payroll tax audits, agency notices, voluntary disclosures, refund claims, controversy matters, and penalty abatement requests.
• Review and advise on payroll tax implications related to mergers and acquisitions, restructurings, entity changes, employee transfers, corporate reorganizations, and year-end reporting.
• Consult on SALT payroll tax treatment of compensation, fringe benefits, equity compensation, bonuses, severance, relocation, expatriate and multi-state employee arrangements.
• Coordinate with Client payroll, HR, finance, tax, and legal teams to assess payroll tax processes, identify risks, and implement practical state and local compliance solutions.
• Provide payroll tax engine consulting, optimization, implementation support, training, and process improvement recommendations for Clients.
• Develop tools, templates, and workflows to help clients manage the multi-state payroll tax compliance process more efficiently.
• Conduct state and local payroll tax technical research and prepare memorandums, client correspondence, and guidance related to employment tax issues.
• Monitor and interpret SALT payroll tax legislative, regulatory, and administrative developments; support thought leadership and internal training related to enacted changes.
• Deliver a full range of SALT-Payroll Tax services, including tax research, risk assessments, compliance reviews, account reconciliations, audit support, and advisory projects.
• Oversee the efforts of multiple client service teams on engagements; plan, execute, direct, and complete SALT-Payroll Tax projects across a wide variety of industries.
• Market, sell, design, and implement innovative payroll tax planning, compliance, and process improvement strategies for clients while managing engagement budgets.
• Make recommendations on business and process improvements related to state and local payroll tax filings, deposits, reconciliations, agency registrations, and reporting controls.
• Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams across Tax, SALT, Human Capital, Risk Advisory, and Consulting to identify and deliver integrated client solutions.
• Manage, develop, train, and mentor staff on SALT-Payroll Tax projects and assess performance for engagement and year-end reviews.
• Support staff development and contribute to the growth of the SALT-Payroll Tax practice.
Requirements
• Minimum 12 years of SALT, payroll tax, employment tax, or related advisory experience with an emphasis on responsibilities listed above.
• Public accounting experience preferred, especially Big 4 or large regional firm experience.
• Minimum 5+ years in a managerial role involving Clients and team members.
• Strong technical knowledge of state and local payroll tax rules, withholding requirements, unemployment tax, employment tax reporting, and tax authority procedures.
• Strong selling skills, including generating leads, making contacts, developing proposals, and securing clients.
• Strong project management and leadership skills, including the ability to successfully coach and mentor talented people.
• Strong organizational and multi-tasking skills with the ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines.
• Strong analytical, critical thinking, and decision-making skills.
• Superior technical, industry, or functional expertise in SALT-Payroll Tax and employment tax matters.
• Strong tax research skills and ability to translate technical guidance into practical client solutions.
• Ability to teach and train others, including internal teams and client stakeholders.
• Bachelor's in accounting, finance, business, or related field; MST, JD, LLM, or other advanced degree preferred.
• Professional accreditation preferred, but eligibility to sit for the CPA exam or a CPA, EA, State Bar admission, CPP, or other relevant certification required.
• Excellent computer skills, including Excel, PowerPoint, and Word; knowledge of payroll tax systems, payroll platforms, tax research tools, OneSource, GoSystems, and related software a plus.
• Preferred knowledge of Power BI, Alteryx, advanced Excel skills, or comparable automation and data analytics tools.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and team-oriented professional style.
• Ability to work independently as well as in groups; responsive, eager, and dynamic.
• Focus on SALT-Payroll Tax/firm achievement and Client service vs. individual accomplishment as career development vehicle.

Certain states require us to disclose the pay range and benefits summary for job openings. The compensation range for this position: $241,400 - $328,800. Compensation may vary based on skills, role, and location. Eligible employees at certain levels can participate in a discretionary long-term financial incentive plan, subject to plan participation rules.
