This project falls within the themes of the IRN CauLaGeNet (Caucasian Languages in and around Georgia Network) co-led by Léa Nash and Jérémy Pasquereau. The successful candidate will conduct their research under the supervision of Léa NASH (University Paris 8/CNRS) and Nikos ANGELOPOULOS (CNRS) on the syntax of discontinuous nominal phrases in typologically diverse languages.
Responsibilities:
Conduct research on the syntax of discontinuous nominal phrases (DNPs). Constituency is widely taken to be the fundamental unit of syntactic structure, with a core assumption in contemporary theories of syntax being that syntactic operations – such as movement, agreement, and coordination – target constituents (hierarchically defined units) rather than arbitrary strings of words. However, cross-linguistic data reveal configurations in which syntactic operations seemingly target material that does not straightforwardly form a constituent. The dissertation will focus on these configurations, namely discontinuous noun phrases. The research will seek to refine the understanding of the relationship between hierarchical structure and surface linearization, and to assess the extent to which constituency remains a universal constraint on syntactic computation.
