General Summary:
The Python Engineer II builds and maintains backend and system-level features. This role focuses on production Python software, Linux system management, MySQL integration, REST APIs, and virtualization workflows. The engineer is responsible for developing high-quality, innovative, fully performing software in compliance with coding standards. This individual works in partnership with cross-functional teams to ensure that software deliverables, including designs, codes, and tests, are completed in a timely manner while remaining aligned with industry and organizational standards.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Provides support to the Engineering team, with a high attention to detail
Designs, builds, and maintains Python services and APIs
Works on systems critical to the organization's current and future operations
Debugs production issues across services and multiple levels of the stack
Assists with improvement of organizational engineering standards, tooling, and processes
Participates in the testing process through test review and analysis, test witnessing, and certification of software
Evaluates codes to ensure validity, proper structure, alignment with industry standards, and compatibility with operating systems
Maintains an understanding of current and new technologies or programming practices through continuing education, reading, and participation in professional conferences, workshops, or groups
Mandatory Experience : Strong hands-on experience with Python, Linux, and MySQL is mandatory. Candidates must have production-level Linux experience, including regular administration, troubleshooting, and management of Linux-based servers in a live production environment. Applicants who work with Linux servers on a daily basis as part of their current role will also be considered suitable.
Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities Required:
2+ years of practical experience building and supporting production software with Python
Strong Python fundamentals, including object-oriented programming, error handling, testing, debugging, and package management
Strong Linux fundamentals and confidence working from the command line
Practical database experience, including schema inspection, joins, transactions, indexes and SQL troubleshooting
Experience with Git, code reviews, automated tests, and CI/CD workflows
Proven experience working in a Scrum or Agile software team
Ability to work independently on projects and processes with close supervision
Knowledge of a variety of the field's concepts, practices, and procedures
Ability to work constructively and independently under stress and pressure in a fast paced, multi-tasking environment
Ability to interact positively and openly with colleagues and external business contacts, with strong verbal and written communication skills
Understanding of relevant software development tools including version control, build processes, debuggers, and test frameworks
Nice to have:
Experience with AWS infrastructure or cloud services
Experience with MongoDB
Experience with Grafana or similar monitoring and observability tools
Understanding of networking concepts, including TCP/IP, DNS, routing, firewalls, VPNs, and port forwarding
Experience with virtualization technologies or APIs, such as KVM, QEMU, libvirt, VMware, or Hyper-V
Understanding of virtual machine lifecycle, virtual disks, snapshots, recovery points, and virtual networking
Experience with backup, disaster recovery, or business continuity products
Educational/Vocational/Previous Experience Recommendations:
Bachelor’s degree in related field or equivalent work experience
2+ years of production Python software engineering experience
Direct experience with Python, Linux, and REST APIs is required
Working Conditions:
Hybrid/Remote/On-site depending on location
0-10% travel may be required
