Job Overview
The University of Antwerp is a dynamic, forward-thinking, European university offering innovative academic education to more than 20,000 students and conducting pioneering scientific research. The Department of Mathematics is seeking a full-time doctoral scholarship holder in the field of Geometry and/or Dynamics. The successful candidate will work actively on the preparation and defence of a PhD thesis, with a research topic falling in the intersection of the current research lines of Prof Sonja Hohloch and Prof Tom Mestdag.

Responsibilities
Research:
- Organise your own PhD research and report on progress regularly.
- Conduct research in topics such as symplectic geometry, (non-)integrable Hamiltonian systems, Floer homology, symmetries of differential equations, geometric mechanics, Finsler geometry, etc. The precise topic will be decided in consultation with the selected candidate.
- Present findings at academic conferences and publish in scientific journals.
- If eligible, apply for a PhD Fellowship at the Science Foundation – Flanders (FWO) in the first year of appointment.

Education:
- Provide support with teaching and teach high-quality academic classes in Mathematics, including basic courses and specialized courses in your research domain.
- Supervise students and their Bachelor and Master dissertations.

Services:
- Play an active role in the academic and societal service provision of the Department of Mathematics.
- Assist in student recruitment and alumni activities.
- Serve on boards and committees.

Requirements and Qualifications
- Hold a Master degree in Mathematics, Physics or Engineering Sciences, or obtain it by the start of work.
- Have not yet obtained a PhD in Mathematics.
- Demonstrate excellent study results.
- Possess very good and broad knowledge of analysis, dynamical systems and differential geometry.
- Have teaching competences in line with the University of Antwerp’s educational vision.
- Have research qualities in line with faculty and university research policies.
- Be motivated to work actively on further professional development.
- Act with attention to quality, integrity, creativity and cooperation.
- Be willing to learn Dutch if not already spoken.
