Core
Designing and maintaining backend integrations between HEN's incident command platform (STAR-IQ) and external public-safety systems like CAD, GIS, and building databases to support fire department operations.
Role type
Senior Backend Engineer (Public Safety Integrations)
Builds
STAR-IQ incident command platform, CAD integration services, GIS mapping layers, and identity management flows for fire departments.
Domain
Public Safety / Emergency Response / Fire Services
Deliverable
production ML models | product features | dashboards & analysis | infrastructure
Required skills
Backend engineering (Python, TypeScript/Node.js), Event-driven systems (MQTT, WebSockets, Kafka), API design (REST, gRPC), Cloud-native (GCP), GIS/Mapping (Mapbox, ESRI, PostGIS), Integration architecture, Schema normalization, Audit logging, CJIS compliance.
Preferred skills
MDM (Jamf, Intune, Kandji), Authentication stacks (OAuth/OIDC, SAML, mTLS, SCIM), Public-safety domain knowledge (CAD, RMS), Fire service/EMS background.
Technologies
Python, TypeScript, Node.js, GCP, Pub/Sub, Cloud Run, Mapbox, ESRI, PostGIS, Kafka, MQTT, WebSockets, REST, gRPC, OAuth, OIDC, SAML, mTLS, SCIM, Jamf, Intune, Kandji, Tyler, Hexagon, Central Square, Mark43, RapidSOS, FirstNet.
Responsibilities
Design and maintain integration services ingesting and transforming CAD data into a unified schema for STAR-IQ. Build integrations to ingest and normalize FD preplan and building data. Integrate mapping and GIS layers (Mapbox, ESRI) behind dashboard surfaces. Wire up SSO, AuthN/AuthZ, and MDM flows for user and device provisioning. Ensure all integrations write to append-only audit logs and respect data separation policies. Create integration documentation, sample payloads, and conformance tests for partners. Design integrations compliant with CJIS Security Policy and agency-specific data handling rules.
