PhD Positions in History and Archeology Science
Role Overview:
Doctoral (PhD) studies at Vytautas Magnus University (VMU) open up unique opportunities for academic research and studies, which contribute to the development of a future generation of highly qualified specialists. Graduates of doctoral studies at VMU are capable of conducting independent scientific research and experimental (social, cultural) development, not to mention solving hot-button issues of Lithuanian, European, and global science. Motivated candidates are invited to participate in the open competition for the announced dissertation topics in History and Archeology Science. Applicants may apply for only one dissertation topic.
Requirements and Qualifications:

- Education Level: Master Degree or equivalent
- Languages: ENGLISH Level Excellent
Documents Required for Application:
- Filled application form (available on the University’s website).
- Document recognizing the qualification acquired abroad issued by the VMU International Cooperation Department.
- Diploma of Master’s degree or qualification adequate to it, its annex/supplement.
- Letters of recommendation by two scholars from history and archeology science field.
- Curriculum Vitae (signed by applicant).
- List of applicant’s scientific publications (submitted in full biobliographic description) and their copies (submitted together with a copy of journal’s cover and contents page); or, if a scientific article in not yet published – a document issued by the editorial board of a scientific journal certifying the acceptance of an article for publication (after the reviewing procedure) and its manuscript.
- Electronic copy of the scientific research project in .doc or .docx format, if two topics are indicated in the application, then 2 scientific research projects need to be submitted.
- Personal identification document.
- Documents notifying the change of surname if not all documents are submitted under the same surname.
- Other documents which an applicant wishes to submit.
What They Offer:
Scholarships and Tuition Fees:
Both state-funded places with scholarships and self-funded places are available. The amount of the scholarship is determined by the Government of the Republic of Lithuania and is as follows: EUR 1,406 per month during the first year of studies; EUR 1,628 per month during the second to fourth years of studies. Tuition fees are as follows: EUR 12,680 per year for full-time studies; EUR 8,453 per year for part-time studies.
Requirements During Studies:
In order to successfully complete the doctoral programme and obtain a doctoral degree upon the defence of the doctoral thesis, doctoral candidates are required to:
- Pass doctoral study examinations and collect 30 ECTS credits.
- Publish at least two research articles in peer-reviewed academic journals.
- Participate in at least two international conferences.
- Complete an internship at a foreign research or academic institution.
