Sr. Materials Engineer, Thin Films
Core
Develop and optimize PECVD-deposited thin films (passivation, anti-reflection, dielectric/semiconductor layers) to enhance the optical and electrical performance of in-house solar cells for the Starlink satellite constellation.
Role type
Senior IC Materials Engineer (Thin Films)
Builds
High-efficiency, high-reliability solar cells for the Starlink satellite network
Domain
Aerospace / Solar Energy / Semiconductor Manufacturing
Deliverable
production ML models | product features | dashboards & analysis | research | client delivery | infrastructure | physical/clinical work -> product features (solar cells)
Required skills
PECVD process engineering, thin-film chemistry and microstructure analysis, root cause analysis (DOE, 5-why), material specification writing, precursor qualification, cross-functional technical leadership, data analysis (Python/JMP/MATLAB), first-principles problem solving
Preferred skills
PhD in materials science/chemical engineering/physics, hands-on PECVD experience in solar/semiconductor fabs, proficiency in thin-film metrology (ellipsometry, FTIR, SEM-EDS, XPS), experience with plasma/vacuum processing and precursor chemistries, mentoring experience
Technologies
PECVD, spectroscopic ellipsometry, FTIR, SEM-EDS, XPS, four-point probe, Python, JMP, MATLAB
Responsibilities
Partner with process engineering to define film-property targets and physical understanding of deposited films; build deep technical understanding of plasma-deposited film materials (composition, stress, optical constants); operate as the technical expert for thin-film materials to solve complex issues autonomously; set priorities and execute multiple complex materials projects in parallel; partner on DOEs and process trials to interpret how plasma/chemistry changes affect film properties; define film material requirements and acceptance criteria; lead structured root cause analysis for materials-limited performance issues; influence cross-functional decisions to improve cell performance and manufacturability; drive path-finding for advanced thin-film materials and stacks; coordinate with suppliers to reduce supply-chain risk; mentor engineers and new hires; champion safety and quality in vacuum and chemical handling activities
Seniority
Senior, hands-on IC
