Full time PhD position in Social Anthropology
Role Overview:
Comenius University in Bratislava, Faculty of Social and Economic Sciences, Institute of Social Anthropology, offers a full-time PhD position starting from September 2025. The research topic focuses on examining gender-specific forms of Muslim religiosity in the urban environment of Bosnia and Herzegovina, with a particular emphasis on women's religious identity, daily piety, and social ties in Sufi-oriented settings. The dissertation should be based on long-term ethnographic research and contribute to anthropological understanding of contemporary Bosnian Islam, gender-differentiated forms of religious life, and the relationship between religiosity, trust, and solidarity in a post-socialist urban environment.
Responsibilities:
The PhD candidate will conduct long-term ethnographic research, focusing on the formation and maintenance of relationships of trust, belonging, and solidarity in urban Muslim communities in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The research will explore how these relationships are interconnected with family, neighbourhood, and urban life, and the roles of religious practices, informal women’s networks, and authorities. The dissertation will contribute to the academic understanding of contemporary Bosnian Islam and gender-differentiated forms of religious life.
Requirements:
- Completed the 2nd grade of higher education in sociology, anthropology, social anthropology, or ethnology.
- B2 level of English language proficiency.
- Ability to think independently and creatively, evaluate critically, and formulate one's own views and opinions.
- Ability to formulate research objectives, identify research areas, collect and evaluate information and research data, analyze it, and formulate conclusions, recommendations, or models for further research, decision-making, or application in practice.
- Interest in cultivating knowledge in both theoretical and practical terms.
- Optional: Experience in managing research projects, teamwork, and participation in international research projects.
Qualifications:
- Graduate of the 2nd degree of university study in sociology, anthropology, social anthropology, or ethnology.
- Knowledge of English at B2 level.
- Critical evaluation of information, processing of fundamental theories and empirical studies.
- Scientific integrity, without signs of plagiarism.
- Experience with writing a scientific text.
- Mastery of methodological concepts of quantitative or qualitative data analysis.
- Ability to critically read texts and scientifically refer to references.
- Scientific communication and presentation skills.
- Independent creative work, analytical thinking, and ability to learn from feedback.
