## Role PhD-Position - Development of scalable superconducting quantum systems ## Organization Forschungszentrum Jülich (Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres) ## Location Aachen, Germany ## Role Overview The mission of the Institute for Functional Quantum Systems (PGI-13) is to create the technological scientific basis to make quantum computing usable. The institute focuses on developing quantum devices, improving their coherence and materials, and implementing quantum gates, algorithms, and architectures. They use superconducting qubits that operate at temperatures close to absolute zero and are controlled by high-speed signals. A key requirement is to preserve high quality quantum operations as the systems scale. This position lies at the interface between scientific research and engineering. ## Responsibilities - Design and fabrication of superconducting quantum circuits - Setting up experimental systems for cryogenic measurements - Development of a microwave quantum control & readout stack - Development of Python code to operate quantum systems - Detailed experimental characterization of superconducting qubits to quantify performance and identify limiting physical mechanisms - Performing quantum device calibrations, benchmarking, and running quantum algorithms - Presenting and publishing research on an international stage ## Requirements and Qualifications - Master’s degree in physics or electrical engineering or a related field - Willingness to work in laboratory and cleanroom environments - Knowledge of solid state physics and/or quantum information - Experience with programming, preferably with Python - Fluent written and spoken English (at least C1 level according to the CEFR) - Team-oriented and highly motivated to work in an experimental laboratory - Ideally, initial experience in a technical or scientific environment (e.g., cleanroom, laboratory) ## Nice to Have - Background in quantum computing - Experience with cryogenics, signal delivery, microfabrication, materials optimization, and microwave control ## What They Offer - Team & Environment: Work in a motivated team with an international and interdisciplinary focus at one of the largest research institutions in Europe. - Research & Infrastructure: Access to excellent scientific and technical facilities. - Supervision & Support: Continuous, expert guidance from an academic supervisor for doctoral studies. - Work-life balance: Flexible working hours and options for flexible working location (subject to consultation and tasks). - Annual Leave: 30 days of annual leave. - Health & well-being: Comprehensive company health management programme including sports facilities (beach volleyball court, running groups, yoga classes), company medical service, and social counselling. - Campus experience: Research campus in the countryside with collegial exchange opportunities, sporting activities, and a cafeteria with lake views. - Fair remuneration: Classification according to pay group 13 (75%) of the TVöD-Bund collective agreement, including a year-end bonus (75% of a monthly salary) and capital-forming benefits. - Perspective: Fixed-term contract of 3.5 years with the prospect of longer-term employment. - Support for international employees: Assistance from the International Advisory Service.
