## About Booma
Booma brings modern AI to industries that software has largely passed by. Our customers are large machine manufacturers, cargo-handling and intralogistics operators, and special-machine builders in regulated sectors — companies running complex, high-stakes operations where reliability and compliance are non-negotiable. We build LLM-driven systems that turn their fragmented technical knowledge, documentation, and processes into something fast, searchable, and genuinely useful on the shop floor and in the back office.
We're a small team, partly in Berlin and partly remote, already working with paying enterprise customers. We're targeting our seed round by the end of this year — and this role is central to getting us there.
## The Role
You'll be one of the most senior engineers in the company: hands-on, building the core of our product day to day, while shaping the architecture, standards, and engineering culture as we scale. This is a builder's role first — but for the right person it's a clear path into a Head of Engineering / engineering leadership mandate as we grow past seed stage.
We want someone who is genuinely progressive about how software gets built today. You should already be pushing the limits of AI-assisted development — fluent with tools like Claude Code and agentic coding workflows, and constantly looking for ways to work faster and smarter than a team our size normally could. We're not looking for someone who's "open to trying" these tools; we want someone already living at that frontier and pulling the rest of the team forward.
Because we're small and close to our customers, you'll also need to understand the business — why a feature matters, what a regulated customer actually needs, and where to spend (and save) engineering effort. Sound judgment under uncertainty matters more here than process.
## What This Role Is (and Isn't)
This is an early-stage startup, and we're honest about what that means. The pressure is real, the priority is velocity, and the scope shifts as we learn. This is not a 9-to-5 — it's a high-intensity, high-ownership environment where you'll wear many hats and ship fast. If you're energized by that kind of pace and ambiguity, you'll thrive here. If you're looking for a predictable, clearly-bounded role, this isn't the right fit — and that's okay.
## What You'll Do
- Build the core product. Design and implement backend services and APIs end to end — clean, performant, well-tested code that ships to real enterprise customers every week.
- Own the architecture. Make and evolve the decisions that matter: service boundaries, data models, frameworks (NestJS, FastAPI), and cloud infrastructure on GCP (Cloud Run, GKE, Compute Engine). Balance speed against technical debt deliberately.
- Push the frontier of how we build. Use AI-native coding tools and agentic workflows (Claude Code and beyond) as a daily multiplier, and bring the whole team along. Build LLM-driven product features with a sharp eye on inference, latency, throughput, and LLMOps.
- Keep it reliable and secure. Maintain uptime, performance, and security for customers in regulated industries. Tune PostgreSQL for real workloads. Strengthen CI/CD so we release with confidence.
- Set the technical bar. As the team grows, mentor engineers, run code reviews, and establish the standards and culture we'll scale on.
- Think like an owner. Connect technical choices to business outcomes, talk directly with founders and customers, and help us get to seed stage and beyond.
## What We're Looking For
- 8+ years of software engineering experience in startups (or comparably fast, high-ownership environments). This is essential — we need someone who has built and shipped under real constraints.
- A candidate who knows what working at a startup actually means: high pressure, a relentless focus on velocity, and comfort with the fact that this isn't a standard 9-to-5.
- Strong backend engineering with NestJS and FastAPI, and a track record of production APIs.
- Hands-on with GCP (Cloud Run, GKE, Compute Engine) and infrastructure-as-code (Terraform or similar).
- Solid PostgreSQL skills: schema design, indexing, query optimization.
- Real experience building robust CI/CD pipelines and automating delivery.
- Sound grasp of secure coding, auth flows, and compliance — important for our regulated customers.
- Progressive, forward-thinking about AI-native development: already pushing the limits with tools like Claude Code and agentic coding workflows, not just curious about them.
- Business sense. You understand why the work matters and can weigh trade-offs with founders and customers, not just within the codebase.
- A get-it-done mindset: resourceful, fast under uncertainty, and motivated by ownership.
- Bonus: passion for transforming traditional, industrial sectors through technology.
## What We Offer
- A highly visible, high-impact role at a company with real paying customers and momentum toward seed.
- True ownership of the tech stack, architecture, and engineering culture — and a credible path into engineering leadership as we grow.
- An attractive equity package, rewarding you for helping get us to the next stage.
- A hybrid setup based in Berlin, with a team that's part on-site and part remote, and a culture that encourages experimentation.
