Civil Project Engineer - Tunnelling & Geotechnical Works

We are seeking an experienced Civil Project Engineer (Tunnelling & Geotechnical Works) to support the delivery of a major infrastructure programme in London (E17). This role will focus on the planning, coordination, and execution of tunnelling, shaft construction, underground structures, geotechnical works, and associated civil engineering activities, ensuring safe, efficient, and high-quality project delivery.

This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to a large-scale and technically complex project, working closely with multidisciplinary teams, specialist subcontractors, designers, and client representatives throughout the project lifecycle.

Job Description

1. Tunnelling & Geotechnical Engineering Delivery

• Support the planning and delivery of tunnelling, shaft sinking, underground structures, deep excavations, and geotechnical construction activities.
• Collaborate with design teams to develop practical and buildable engineering solutions for geotechnical and underground works.
• Review and coordinate geotechnical investigations, ground reports, construction methodologies, and design deliverables.
• Manage technical interfaces between tunnelling, civil, structural, and temporary works packages.
• Coordinate specialist subcontractors involved in tunnelling, ground support, ground improvement, dewatering, excavation, and temporary works.
• Monitor construction activities to ensure compliance with approved designs, specifications, and industry standards.
• Support the management of geotechnical risks and assist in developing mitigation measures for challenging ground conditions.
• Participate in engineering reviews, risk workshops, constructability assessments, and client meetings.
• Assist with procurement activities, tender evaluations, and subcontractor engagement.
• Support site operations, including RAMS reviews, temporary works coordination, logistics planning, and permit management.
• Provide technical leadership and guidance to site teams while promoting a strong culture of safety, quality, and operational excellence.

2. Programme Delivery

• Monitor progress of tunnelling and geotechnical work packages against the master programme.
• Identify technical, logistical, and construction risks that may impact project delivery.
• Work collaboratively with planning teams to develop recovery plans and maintain key milestones.
• Coordinate activities across multiple disciplines to ensure efficient sequencing of underground and surface works.
• Support the production of progress reports and engineering updates for project leadership and the client.

3. Commercial & Contract Management

• Support the administration of NEC contracts and specialist subcontract agreements.
• Assist with change management, compensation events, and technical evaluations.
• Contribute to cost forecasting, earned value analysis, and project reporting.
• Work closely with commercial teams to manage valuations, variations, and subcontractor performance.
• Ensure engineering solutions are delivered safely, efficiently, and in accordance with project budget objectives.

4. Stakeholder Management

• Act as a key interface between designers, geotechnical specialists, tunnelling contractors, temporary works designers, site teams, and client representatives.
• Attend and chair engineering, progress, and coordination meetings as required.
• Support communication and coordination across all project stakeholders to ensure effective project execution.
• Collaborate with regulatory authorities and third-party stakeholders where required.

5. Governance, Safety & Compliance

• Promote a proactive safety culture and ensure compliance with CDM Regulations, project SHE requirements, and industry best practice.
• Ensure tunnelling and geotechnical activities are undertaken in accordance with approved permits, risk assessments, and method statements.
• Support Temporary Works procedures and ensure compliance with BS 5975 requirements.
• Maintain project documentation, including RAMS, ITPs, inspection records, geotechnical monitoring data, temporary works documentation, and as-built records.
• Support quality assurance processes and ensure compliance with project specifications and engineering standards.

6. Testing, Commissioning & Handover

• Support testing and verification activities associated with underground infrastructure and civil works.
• Ensure construction records, quality documentation, and asset information are completed and maintained.
• Coordinate snagging, defect resolution, and handover activities.
• Assist in the successful completion and handover of work packages to the client and operational teams.

Required Skills and Competencies

Essential

• Degree qualified in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
• Experience delivering major infrastructure, heavy civil engineering, tunnelling, or underground construction projects.
• Strong understanding of geotechnical engineering principles and tunnelling construction methods.
• Experience coordinating multidisciplinary engineering and construction teams.
• Knowledge of NEC contracts and project controls.
• Familiarity with temporary works management and construction safety requirements.
• Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.

Desirable

• Chartered Engineer status or working towards chartership (ICE or equivalent).
• Experience with shafts, pipejacking, microtunnelling, SCL, TBM, or deep excavation works.
• Knowledge of geotechnical instrumentation and ground monitoring.
• Experience working on major water, rail, energy, utilities, or industrial infrastructure projects.
