Engineering Manager, Data Orchestration Platform

Who We Are

About Stripe
Stripe is a financial infrastructure platform for businesses. Millions of companies - from the world’s largest enterprises to the most ambitious startups - use Stripe to accept payments, grow their revenue, and accelerate new business opportunities. Our mission is to increase the GDP of the internet, and we have a staggering amount of work ahead. That means you have an unprecedented opportunity to put the global economy within everyone’s reach while doing the most important work of your career.

About the Team

The Data Orchestration team ensures that Stripe's engineers have the most productive experience developing and operating secure, reliable, and efficient data pipelines across all execution environments. The team owns Airflow — Stripe's data workflow scheduling platform — end to end: the infrastructure, developer experience, deployment systems, and migration roadmap. Airflow is one of the most broadly depended-on internal platforms at the company.

What Makes This Role Compelling

Broad platform impact: Airflow sits in the critical path of data work across nearly every engineering team at Stripe — decisions here affect hundreds of engineers and thousands of production workflows daily.

Active modernization: The team is in the middle of a significant multi-year architectural transition, offering real technical leadership opportunities across migration strategy, developer experience, and systems design.

Concrete scope: Projects have well-defined metrics and reliability targets — you'll manage a team with clear engineering goals and measurable outcomes.

Cross-team influence: Data Orchestration partners closely with other infrastructure and product engineering teams, giving the EM a broad surface for organizational influence and alignment.

Responsibilities

Own the Platform Roadmap: Define the multi-year direction for Airflow at Stripe — synthesizing the needs of a large and diverse set of consuming teams, resolving cross-team dependencies, and driving adoption of the next-generation platform across the organization.

Lead and Scale: Build, mentor, and grow a high-performing team, investing in career development and fostering a culture of operational excellence.

Ensure Operational Rigor: Maintain unwavering reliability for a Tier-0 platform that a significant portion of Stripe's daily data workloads depend on.

Technical Stewardship: Guide the team through high-stakes architectural decisions in workflow scheduling, containerized job execution, DAG lifecycle management, and large-scale platform migrations — setting the technical bar for reliability, developer experience, and systems design.

Who You Are

Minimum requirements

10+ years of professional software development and engineering experience.

5+ years of direct engineering management experience, successfully building and operating high-velocity technical teams.

Proven track record of driving significant infrastructure efficiency, managing capacity planning, and making data-driven cost-performance trade-offs.

Experience working effectively in highly cross-functional, global organizations.

Preferred requirements

Experience managing remote or geographically distributed engineering teams.

Technical background in building, scaling, and operating large-scale workflow orchestration infrastructure, with deep expertise in Airflow. Familiarity with the broader data ecosystem Airflow integrates with (Spark, Kafka, AWS S3).

Demonstrated ability to navigate strategic ambiguity and deliver complex, multi-quarter infrastructural projects from inception to completion.

Deep empathy for internal data users with a passion for building robust developer tooling and abstractions.
